Already for the 15th consecutive time CH24 selects and awards the most interesting new timepieces form the past […]
The jubilee edition of the CH24 Watch of the Year comes to a happy ending – in a new form and with more exceptional works of watchmaking art, which were nominated and awarded by the international jury and the online audience.
This is already the 15th, and therefore jubilee edition of the CH24 Watch of the Year. We have been rewarding the most interesting watches of the past 12 months (first with nominations, and then with awards) for a decade and a half now. During this time, the competition statuettes went to over 100 winning models, and almost 1 000 timepieces, which represented what is most interesting, best and most impressive in the watch industry, passed through the nominations.
We decided to celebrate our anniversary with a special dinner, organized in the “Warszawa” restaurant, located in the historic building of the Hotel Warszawa. In its hospitable, uniquely designed interiors, we gathered the entire Polish watch industry, including representatives of brands, distributors and partners.
This event would not be possible without our sponsors, who this year are Porsche Polska and Jura. The media patronage over the event was held by Vogue Polska magazine (for which we are preparing the watch supplement “Vogue: Watches & Jewellery”). The honorary patronage over the event is held by the Embassy of Switzerland in Poland.
The evening, during which we revealed the winners of the competition categories, was hosted by Mateusz Hładki, and the guests were welcomed at the beginning by the Ambassador of Switzerland – Fabrice Filliez – and Tomasz Kiełtyka.
While in previous years the representatives of the winning brands visited Poland to receive their statuettes, this year we decided to reverse the roles. This means that together with some of the jury members we will soon go on a trip to Switzerland, during which we will personally deliver the awards directly to the winning manufactures.
Here is the full list of this year’s winners – headed by the ultra-precise winner of the Grand Prix and the prestigious Public Prize.
Although the men’s watch category encompasses a wide range of different types of timepieces, it should above all include stylistic elegance, watchmaking class and a certain dose of nonchalance. The Quantieme Lunaire, from the revamped Duometre line, which was thoroughly refreshed this year, is a majestic display of the highly-priced manufacture with two main springs that guarantee an even energy supply and a somewhat poetic display of the moon phases. Jaeger-LeCoultre has included all of this on an opalescent blue dial, and the whole thing is wrapped in a discreet, nicely rounded steel case.
The unconventional design of the 1930s is increasingly gaining favor with contemporary designers. The Geneva based micro-brand Furlan Marri reached for the Disco Volante design, beloved by seasoned collectors – a watch with a case resembling a flying saucer. Furlan Marri skillfully interpreted the extremely characteristic form with hidden lugs, taking into account the contemporary size of the case and the manually wound, slim movement. In the version where matte green meets warm beige, the watch perfectly combines vintage vibe with contemporary, effortless elegance.
The Streamliner, designed by H. Moser & Cie. manufacture, has taken the watchmaking scene by storm. In the category of integrated sports watches, there has not been a design as original and bringing a breath of stylistic freshness for a long time. The Streamliner Blue Enamel is a slightly reduced version of the watch, combining a perfectly ergonomic case and bracelet made of steel with a unique, minimalist dial crafted out of blue enamel. H. Moser & Cie. The Streamliner has all the makings of a future icon of the classy and chic sports watch category.
The iconic status of the Chanel fashion house in the world of haute couture allowed it to rather swiftly enter the world of watches, especially those dedicated to women. Today, the J12 collection is one of the most recognizable lines of women’s timepieces, perfectly combining sporty style with modern materials and discreet chic. The J12 Automaton Caliber 6 model is a watch made of black ceramic, with the dial decorated with the figurine of Coco Chanel in her Parisian atelier. One press of the button in the case makes Coco’s scissors come to life, powered by a mechanical automaton. The impression is further enhanced by 48 diamonds set in the bezel.
Women’s watches are one of the categories that are currently experiencing the greatest renaissance. Previously vastly underestimated by the watch industry, women are choosing consciously and know exactly what they expect from the perfect watch. The new Longines Conquest in the 34-millimeter version, with an automatic movement, is a perfect proposition for almost any occasion, and additionally the pastel shade of the green dial gives it a unique, somewhat casual charm.
Since the dawn of time, mechanical watchmaking has stubbornly strived for the greatest possible precision and overcoming barriers in terms of the most accurate measurement of passing time. The latest work of the watchmakers from Schaffhausen allows for the precise measurement of not only time but also a complete calendar indications. The Portuguese Eternal Calendar has been programmed in such a way that it is fully mechanically able to indicate the exact date and its derivatives up to the year 3999. If that was not enough, the moon phases – for the northern and southern hemispheres respectively – will not record a deviation of one day until 45 million years later. These are absolute records, and IWC has managed to wrap everything in the elegant style of a classic Portugieser.
IWC Portugieser Eternal Calendar is our 2024 Grand Prix! For its impressive show of watchmaking craftsmanship, aspiring to the rank of a true art.
The winner of the Special Jury Prize at CH24 Watch of the Year is Daniel Roth – one of the most outstanding watchmakers in history, with over 50 years of experience in the watchmaking industry, expressed through his work on great complications such as the torubillon with an 8-day power reserve, the perpetual calendar or the Westminster repeater with four gongs. He linked his professional career mainly with Breguet manufacture, and in 2001 created his own brand Jean-Daniel Nicolas. Currently, the company bearing Daniel Roth name belongs to the LVMH group and faithfully cultivates the master’s watchmaking achievements and unique style.
Although this year’s edition of Watch of the Year is rich in modern watches that do not refer to history, “Public Prize” has proven once again how well the trend for everything vintage is doing. The Chronograph 1 by Prosche Design is a design-icon from the 70s, which in its limited version for Hodinkee is almost one hundred percent faithful to the original, with its black case and bracelet, legible dial with a blood-red seconds hand and a whole lot of automotive DNA. The iconic chronograph by Prosche is like the iconic 911 – despite its years, it does not age at all.
Below you will find a short photo report from the gala dinner crowning the “CH24 Watch of the Year” 2024.
This year, for the first time, we prepared a watch exhibition for attendees, which consisted of several nominated models.
